MAVIS ROBSON and her husband won a fancy dress competition because they were the only partygoers to take part (Peterborough). I entered the Hale village cakemaking competition at the annual carnival day and won first prize for my welsh bara brith for three consecutive years. Flushed with success, I entered for a fourth year. Imagine my disappointment when, on the day, a friend greeted me with the words: ‘I see your bara brith was highly commended.’ Feeling my expertise had waned, I entered the village hall to see my cake was the only one entered in its category!
