COMEDY DRAMA The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, Amazon Prime

IN FIFTIES New York,York Jewish housewife Mrs Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) stumbles accidental­ly — and, as it turns out, brilliantl­y — into stand-up comedy. This scintillat­ing series from Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls) has a script that zigzags from zingers to poignancy, delivered with pizzazz by a cast that includes Tony Shalhoub as Mrs Maisel’s dad and Alex Borstein (pictured with Brosnahan) as Susie, a short, sharp-talking club promoter who is often mistaken for a boy.

HIDDEN GEMS Salvage Hunters, 9pm, Quest

THE last of the series is a lively affair as Drew roots around the Lake District’s Lingholm Estate, where Beatrix Potter spent summer holidays. Later, he’s at Tutbury Castle, where the curator — dressed as Elizabeth I — gives him a fascinatin­g insight into its history.

SARTORIAL SNIPING Fashion Police: The Farewell, 9pm, E!

THIS U.S. series, in which a panel deliver acerbic critiques of celebrity fashion, hasn’t been the same since the death of Joan Rivers, who could always be relied on to say something outrageous. This final episode features unseen footage of her. (Sky 151, Virgin 156)

FREEVIEW MOVIE The Riot Club, 9pm, Film4

LAURA WADE adapts her own hit stage play, Posh, for the big screen. It’s a satirical look at class, privilege and power, inspired by Oxbridge ‘dining clubs’, such as the Bullingdon. Douglas Booth, Sam Claflin, Max Irons and Sam Reid are the students putting their livers and their futures on the line.

PRICKLY PENSIONER The Rebel, 10pm, Gold

WITH the help of Charles’s ex-wife, Angela (Frances Barber), Charles and Henry (Bill Paterson and Simon Callow, pictured) go on a narcotic adventure in tonight’s new episode. Henry (Simon Callow) enjoys this partly because it irritates his stiff daughter so much, and events all build towards a big comic climax that gives us a deeper peek into her character.

GOLD DIGGERS Detectoris­ts, 10pm, BBC4

LANCE (Toby Jones) is camping out to protect whatever treasure might be in the ground in this delightful new episode. He’s obsessed with magpies stealing the gold, a paranoia explained by two things — he hasn’t slept and he would rather think about the magpies than what to do about Maggie, who’s taken over his home.

HORROR FLICK Creepy, 10.10pm, Sky Premiere

CHILLING suburban horror from Japan, a deftly-handled slow-burner. Is Koichi and Yasuko’s odd new neighbour, Mr Nishino, a misunderst­ood loner — or something far worse?

BAD ADVICE Nathan For You, 11.05pm, Comedy Central

CANADIAN comic Nathan Fielder has a business degree and poses as an expert in helping small businesses to turn around their fortunes. He comes up with crazy ideas to ‘help’ in this series, but delivers them in such an unflinchin­g, deadpan style that his clients find them sane.
