Euthanasia is allowed in Oz

-

EUTHANASIA was yesterday legalised in the Australian state of Victoria – the only region in the country to do so.

After 100 hours of debate, politicians passed the bill allowing terminally ill patients to end their lives.

Adults who have less than six months to live will have the right to request a lethal drug from June 2019. Those applying must be determined by doctors to be suffering intolerable pain and be of sound mind.

They will be given a lethal drug within ten days of asking to die.

State premier Daniel Andrews – who supported the bill after the death of his father last year – said patients should have the right to ‘choose to be in control of the last part of their journey’. Assisted suicide is illegal in most countries and was previously banned in Australia.
