Super way to nail a spot at university
THE January deadline is looming for most UCAS university applications, with admissions tutors on the lookout for topachieving students, as well as scouring personal statements for evidence of enthusiasm for subjects far beyond the classroom.
Dr David Crouch, of Justin Craig Education, advises students that doing ‘super-curricular’ activities will help consolidate their work and revision and enrich their UCAS statements. He recommends downloading lectures, entering academic competitions, visiting museums, taking part in study trips, debates and public speaking as well as work experience.
‘These are activities undertaken outside of the normal classroom but directly related to the subject you are hope to study.
‘Evidence of taking part in super-curricular activities gives good universities confidence Tips: Dr David Crouch that you are serious about their course. Aspiring medics and dentists often volunteer in local care homes and dental surgeries.’ Some education providers, such as Justin Craig Education, have teamed up with biochemistry research facilities and are offering short clinical and laboratory-based training courses from beginner to advanced levels, which would be ideal.
Dr Crouch adds: ‘By using your subject knowledge in a practical environment, you will enhance your ability to retain information.’
