ROONEY’S RIOT!

Stunning hat-trick lifts new boss Sam

- DOMINIC KING

WAYNE ROONEY’S first Premier League hat-trick in six years — including a cannonball goal from his own half — helped Everton demolish West Ham 4-0 in front of new boss Sam Allardyce.

The incoming manager, watching from the directors’ box, enjoyed a vibrant display under caretaker boss David Unsworth on a miserable night for the Hammers’ former Everton boss David Moyes. Rooney’s first goal came straight after Joe Hart had saved his penalty and it was 2-0 by half-time.

His third was from nearly 60 yards, while Ashley Williams made it four and Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved a penalty from Manuel Lanzini. ‘It’s one of the best goals I’ve scored, if not the best, and my first hat-trick for Everton,’ said Rooney of his 66th-minute stunner.

Sportsmail columnist Martin Keown described Rooney’s effort as ‘one of the great moments in the Premier League’. Allardyce will now assume control at Everton, who moved up four places to 13th in the Premier League table last night, and Rooney has backed the former England manager to make a big impact.

‘He’ll be pleased, but for us as a team it was important that the last few weeks were sorted out and for us to show some pride,’ he added.

‘It was important we got a clean sheet and a victory to steady what we’d been going through.’
