BIGGAR: LET’S FORGET STYLE AND WIN UGLY AGAINST BOKS

- By WILL KELLEHER

DAN BIGGAR says Wales are ready to abandon their new expansive style and win ugly against South Africa tomorrow to save their autumn. After defeats by Australia and New Zealand, and an edgy win over Georgia, Wales have been the least impressive of the home nations this month. Warren Gatland has tried to expand the Welsh style of play, but Biggar is tired of looking pretty but not winning. ‘We’ll find out how decent an autumn we’ve had come Saturday at 4pm,’ he said. ‘If the scoreboard is in South Africa’s favour we’ll all have to admit it’s been a poor autumn. ‘But if we get a win, backed up with the performances against Australia and New Zealand, it will be a decent autumn and will build in nicely to the Six Nations and the summer tour to Argentina. ‘The only thing that matters to us is to make sure we are winners on Saturday rather than being positive about playing well but not getting over the line. ‘We need to toughen up. It’s not about the pretty things — knuckle down, get your boots dirty and front up.’ Biggar wins his 60th cap tomorrow, meaning he will be eligible for Test selection next season when he moves to Northampton Saints. He will play inside Scarlets centre Hadleigh Parkes, the New Zealand-born 30-year-old who qualifies for Wales on the day of the Test, having completed three years’ residency. Biggar was confident the skill and power of Parkes (above) could provide Wales with the variation they need to beat South Africa. ‘He can get us going forward,’ Biggar added. ‘But he has subtle skills as well — it’s about trying to combine the two. Don’t go down one route, but try to mix up his game a little bit, because he’s got some lovely touches.’ Scott Andrews starts at tighthead as Tomas Francis has returned to Exeter and Leon Brown is concussed. Ken Owens has a back injury, so Kristian Dacey comes into the inexperienced front row.
