We cracked the case, now we’re cracking open the bubbly!

- By Ross Parker

WITH Christmas just around the corner, all of us could do with a bit of extra cash.

So grandmother Julie Ford was particularly thrilled when she became the latest winner of the daily Mail’s murder mystery competition – scooping £25,000.

Mrs Ford, 69, is planning to treat her son, daughter and grandchildren to a particularly special yuletide this year. ‘For it to happen just before Christmas is a huge bonus. It’s a lovely present,’ the retired nurse said.

Mrs Ford used her knowledge of old films to solve six clues in last week’s papers to become the second winner of the competition.

She said: ‘ I’m on cloud nine, I can’t believe it. I’ve never won anything in my life. It was a great shock really.’

Mrs Ford, who lives with her husband Geoff, 71, in kingsley, near Frodsham in Cheshire, won the prize by working out the name of the killer in last week’s mystery.

readers were asked to solve the mystery of who murdered the actress Bette Starr. a picture in last Saturday’s Mail showed the actress lying on a chaise longue on a film set with a stab wound to her stomach and a bloodied knife next to her on the floor.

the clues were six different films that pointed to the name of the killer. ‘I thought it was a bit more tricky than the previous week,’ Mrs Ford said. ‘I saved all the clues each day and went back to the first picture that was in the Mail on Saturday.

‘they were all old films, like the Bridge On the river kwai and things like that and I was trying to think “are they going to make an anagram out of the actor’s names or something? What’s it going to be?” then I went back to the picture and there was something about an ornament on the mantelpiece and there was actually an Oscar there.’

Mrs Ford then worked out the killer’s name – the clues were pointing to Mrs Starr’s cuckolded husband Oscar.

Mr and Mrs Ford celebrated the news with a bottle of bubbly on the weekend.

they are thinking about putting the money towards a car, but are keen to buy something nice for their two children first.

Mrs Ford said: ‘I’d like to treat both of them and as far as what we’ll do for us, I’m not sure yet.’
