Not good when both sets of fans boo you!
YOU know you’ve had a bad day at the office when the home and away fans are both on your back! However, while Martin Atkinson missed a clear penalty for Watford in the final minute, he got the other major decisions correct. Watford earlier wanted a penalty when Richarlison tangled with Ben Davies but it was as much the Watford player causing contact as anything else so I wouldn’t have awarded a penalty. Then Atkinson sent off Davinson Sanchez when his outstretched arm caught Richarlison in the face (left). Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino felt it wasn’t deliberate but the Spurs player knew the risk he was taking when he flung out his arm. If he’d merely blocked the Brazilian it would definitely only have been a yellow. Missing Eric Dier’s last-minute handball was Atkinson’s clearest mistake and he should look at his poor positioning late in the game and challenge himself to do better as it was a stonewall penalty.
