Two see red in Guiseley nightmare

- ALAN BIGGS at Field Mill

no ONE from guiseley dreamed it quite like this — unless they suffered a nightmare on the eve of the club’s first appearance in the Fa Cup second round. The West Yorkshire side had two men sent off in a defeat that should have been even more comprehensive. Steve Evans’s league Two Mansfield were singlehandedly denied by the brilliance of the national league team’s keeper, Jonny Maxted, before Jimmy Spencer’s hat-trick sealed victory. at 1-0 down, guiseley had Darren holden sent off for what looked a shocking over-the-top challenge and Chris M’Boungou followed him for two yellow cards, again with no complaints. it was a wretched return to Field Mill for guiseley boss Paul Cox and his assistant Paul Murray, both former Stags managers. and there was evidently some bad feeling, too, as tension between the benches spilled over at the end. as the Mansfield boss strode over to attempt a handshake, Cox marched on to the field. Blanked, Evans gave a dismissive wave of the arm. he also criticised the non-leaguers, saying: ‘They had a game plan to be very physical. ‘You’re never going to beat us like that. i thought we were fantastic in spells.’ Cox said: ‘it’s disappointing. We never got to grips with the game.’ remarkably, Spencer’s goals were his first for Mansfield — a header, a volley and a penalty. While the focus was rightly on guiseley, Mansfield have claims to fame in this competition. Back in 1969 on this ground, they reached the quarter-finals by winning 3-0 against a West ham side boasting World Cup trio Bobby Moore, geoff hurst and Martin Peters. guiseley had a 675-strong following, but now have a basement battle at second bottom of the national league.
