Apple packaging made to fit your car drinks holder!
MARKS & SPENCER was criticised yesterday for selling apples in plastic tubes designed to fit into car cup holders.
The retailer said the cylinders offered convenience and protection. But customers and scientists said the move was irresponsible and an example of packaging overkill.
The row was started by a marine ecologist, Bryce Stewart, who tweeted: ‘If only apples came with some kind of protective edible skin ... poor show M&S – I thought you cared about plastic pollution.’
The retailer replied: ‘The main reasons for the tube are protection
and convenience. Being a small pack, it can easily fit in a car cup holder, or a bag.’
The store chain said the packaging was widely recycled but added that it was reviewing the issue.
Glen Wright, a marine policy expert, said: ‘This is a comically weak response from M&S to a legitimate consumer concern.
‘Apples are widely sold without any such packaging and are naturally resilient. I just ate one that had been rattling around at the bottom of my bag for about a week.’
