THICK, black stockings have been banned at King’s College Hospital. Instead, nurses must wear sheer stockings. Notices say: ‘Thick stockings are not to be worn. Repeat NOT. Any nurse who wears other than nylon or lisle will be sent to Sister or Matron.’ Said a nurse: ‘The 15-30 denier constantly ladder and are cold. This is a question of appearance before comfort.’

DECEMBER 5, 1966

THE Prince of Wales (right) is going to Trinity College, Cambridge. Lord Butler, Master of Trinity, said: ‘Prince Charles will take a special course in History, made up by us.’ It is likely the course will involve constituti­onal and political history, and foreign languages, as they would be of value to a future King. Trinity allows girls to be brought into the college hall for lunch — a radical move.
