Child killer Brady costs taxpayer £19k after he dies

- By Liz Hull

MOORS Murderer Ian Brady cost taxpayers £19,000 after his death, it emerged yesterday.

The bill included £15,500 spent on security for the notorious child killer’s corpse.

Brady, 79, who had been in jail for more than 50 years, died of chronic lung disease at highsecurity Ashworth Hospital in May. His body was kept in Royal Liverpool Hospital’s mortuary.

The figures, released under Freedom of Information laws, revealed that just over £1,000 of public money was spent on his cremation. This included a £35 pink rock salt biodegradable urn bought by Sefton Council.

Another £2,570 was spent by Merseyside police on escorting the body. The bill amounts to five times the average cost of a funeral – £3,784 – according to the Royal London National Funeral Cost Index.

Terry Kilbride, whose 12-yearold brother John was one of five victims of Brady and accomplice Myra Hindley, told The Sun: ‘We’ve paid for him all his life. We had an idea of how much it’s cost to keep him in – the expense of the police and Ashworth Hospital and so on. It all mounts up. No one should have to pay any more for him.’
