Euro MPs’ bid to make Brexit seem bad idea
ARROGANT EU 1
THE European Parliament wants to make Britain accept a list of hardline demands in return for an ambitious trade deal, leaked documents have revealed.
MEPs want to curb any benefits to the UK so Brexit does not look like a positive move. The text also shows how MEPs will try to limit the scope of talks by linking a good deal to the number of EU rules Britain is willing to accept after Brexit.
A resolution drafted by the European Parliament’s most senior figures, including Brexit head Guy Verhofstadt, spelled out the demands earlier this week. Among them are calls for the UK to continue to guarantee rights set out in the European Convention of Human Rights – a bugbear of Theresa May.
Senior MEPs also insist a free trade deal should include a ‘binding role’ for the European Court of Justice, whose jurisdiction Mrs May has promised to end. The draft document was penned on the provision that Mrs May signed off a deal last Monday and would have been voted by the chamber on Wednesday.
