EU’s court fight… with EU nations

ARROGANT EU 3

-

BRUSSELS yesterday escalated its fight with EU countries that have refused to take part in a migrant relocation scheme by taking them to court.

The European Commission said it was referring Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic to the European Court of Justice for failing to take 10,000 migrants between them. Hungary and Poland have taken none at all, while the Czech Republic has accepted 12. The relocation scheme was brought in at the peak of the 2015 migration crisis to take pressure off Greece and Italy, by sending 160,000 registered asylum seekers to live in other EU countries.

The UK is not part of the scheme, having negotiated an exemption from asylum rules. The commission’s vice-president Frans Timmermans said he did his utmost to avoid legal action and court proceedings could still be avoided.
