SWEET AND FORTIFIED
NV Sumptuously Rich Pudding Wine, De Bortoli, Riverina, Australia (£8.99, half bottle, Aldi)
THIS is one of the most decadent and intensely toffeeish sweet wines of the year. With a coffee and prune nose and a caramel and fig flavour, this is an incredible wine with leftover Christmas pudding, chocolates and Christmas cake, too. Chill it a touch to focus on the huge flavours and wallow in its depths.
NV Finest Reserve Port, Douro Valley, Portugal (£12, reduced to £9 until December 25, Marks & Spencer)
ONE of the highest-scoring wines of the season, this is made by the great David Guimaraens of Taylor’s Port fame. Total class in a glass, at £9 this port is heroic and hugely enjoyable — every ounce of its majestic flavour will send your palate into rapture.
2015 Château Tirecul la Gravière, Les Pins, Monbazillac, France (£13.95, 50cl bottle, reduced to £12.50 each by the case, Lea & Sandeman, 020 7244 0522, leaandsandeman.co.uk).
I LOVE Monbazillac, the historic style of sweet wine from southwest France. Made in the same manner as Sauternes, but a fraction of the price, this is one of the most delicate and beautiful apricot-scented sweet whites of the world. Once tasted never forgotten. Pure magic.
NV Graham’s, Six Grapes, Reserve Port, Douro Valley, Portugal (£15.49, Flagship Wines,
flagshipwines. co.uk, amazon.co.uk, henningswine.co.uk)
THIS is my favourite ‘super-ruby’ port of the year and it comes from the awesome Graham’s Port House. Big, bold and immensely long on the palate, this is a wine designed for pouring after dinner and drinking late into the night with your very best friends.
