Asda to axe 800 jobs in store wars

-

ASDA is preparing to shed more than 800 jobs as it battles to compete against discounters Aldi and Lidl.

As many as 842 section leader posts face the axe, while thousands of workers could see their hours cut as the supermarket looks at reducing the amount of time spent stacking shelves.

Asda’s proposals are in contrast to its discount competitor Lidl, which has increased wages and taken on 2,500 staff over the past year.

An Asda spokesman said: ‘While these are only proposals, we know talking about change is unsettling, which is why we’re working with our colleagues to get their views before any final decisions are made early next year.’
