Do more on plastic
OUR report today that almost eight million families are unable to recycle everyday plastics shows too many councils are still failing in their duty to reduce the toxic tide of pollution.
More than a quarter of local authorities won’t take such items as plastic food trays, yoghurt pots and margarine tubs – even though they can be recycled. One council – Copeland in Cumbria – refuses to collect any plastic at all.
This is simply not good enough. Families are trying to do the right thing but are being thwarted by short- sighted bureaucrats. Is it any wonder that recycling rates are stagnating?
We also highlight today some of the councils who go far beyond the norm, accepting almost all forms of plastic. If they can do it, why can’t all the others?
