Relax rules on abortion pills, urges expert
WOMEN should be allowed to take abortion pills in the comfort of their own homes, according to one of the country’s top doctors.
The current law states that women can take the tablets only in a hospital or clinic under the supervision of a doctor or nurse.
But Professor Lesley Regan, president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said this was a hugely distressing ordeal.
Due to the nature of the tablets, women will often start bleeding or experiencing severe contractions on their way home.
The pills used to induce a medical abortion must be taken between 24 and 48 hours apart. This means women must travel to the clinic twice in two days, which critics say creates unnecessary anxiety.
The college will now provide the Government with a series of evidence and arguments outlining the need for a change in the law.
