They’ve solved No 1 problem
WE CAN all marvel at Manchester City’s array of attacking talent, but what has transformed them into champions-elect is their goalkeeper Ederson. How many games last season did City dominate before being undone by a cheap goal? They could not dream of being champions while Claudio Bravo — who kept conceding from the first shot he faced — was playing. Think of Peter Schmeichel at Manchester United, David Seaman at Arsenal and Petr Cech at Chelsea. Great champions have top goalkeepers. City were a class apart yesterday but with John Stones out and Vincent Kompany going off at half-time, it was vital that Ederson was on form. When United got their best chance, he made two huge saves. The title race is all but over before Christmas and Ederson’s importance cannot be underestimated. It is understood that tempers flared between Ederson and Jose Mourinho after the game. While I am sure everyone involved in the tunnel fracas will regret their actions, it is easy to see why the City players would get carried away after such a big win.
