Pawson makes all the right calls

- GRAHAM POLL

DEJAN LOVREN pushed Dominic Calvert-Lewin inside the Liverpool penalty area and Craig Pawson was absolutely right to award a penalty kick. Of course, Calvert-Lewin went over easily, as players do these days. We can call it a ‘soft’ penalty and Liverpool players can say they feel hard done by, but Pawson was right. Given that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp asked reporters for a show of hands in his press conference and the majority said ‘penalty’, I think he probably knew it was the right decision — otherwise he’d have ranted about poor decisions costing his team. Pawson handled this game well, applying common sense when possible and correctly issuing only four yellow cards. Klopp thought Gylfi Sigurdsson deserved a red card for his tackle on Jordan Henderson but the official got that right too.
