Don’t comfort Corbyn
THOUGH we disagree strongly with his pro-Brussels stance, this paper has some respect for Tory former attorney general Dominic Grieve, who has seldom allowed political expediency to sway his beliefs.
But we urge him to think very hard before he presses ahead with his amendment to the Brexit Bill, which would give MPs a ‘meaningful’ vote that could scupper any deal with the EU.
Leave aside that only yesterday, the OECD confirmed a truth Remainers never mention – that four of the five countries with the developed world’s worst jobless rates are in the EU. So much for the bloc guaranteeing prosperity!
If Mr Grieve and his backers succeed in sabotaging Brexit, they will not only risk betraying the 17.4million who voted to pull out, in a referendum that Parliament overwhelmingly agreed should be binding.
They will strike a blow against Theresa May, significantly increasing the danger of a Corbyn-led government committed to state socialism and class warfare.
Is that a risk even the most vehement of Tory Remainers is prepared to take?
