Follow-up

BOB HUNT’S letter about the Hammersmith Palais (Peterborough) reminded me of my own early dancing years at Sheffield City Hall. Aged 16, I was persuaded by a pal to go to a Saturday night dance and recall going downstairs to the ballroom. As I got nearer I could hear an orchestra, the music echoing in the corridor and up the stairs. When I reached the ballroom, I gasped at the beauty of the place. I stood on the edge of the dance floor and was overwhelmed by the magic of it all and have been in love with the place ever since. As with all Sheffielders who used to go to the City Hall for the Saturday night dances, I have wonderful memories of Bernard Taylor and his orchestra, Cyril Ball the MC and Barry who played the organ during intervals.
