MAGIC MARRIOTT ENDS WOKING’S CUP FAIRYTALE

-

AS a youngster learning his trade, Jack Marriott had three spells on loan at Woking, but last night fired the crucial goals as Peterborough defeated the non-League club 5-2 to end their FA Cup dream. Inih Effiong had put Woking ahead, before Michael Doughty hit back. Then Marriott intervened. His 16th goal of the season, a looping header, will not win any prizes for beauty but it did put Peterborough’s noses in front in the race to meet Aston Villa in the third round. And when substitute Matt Young equalised for Woking in the second half, within 60 seconds Marriott was sliding in to do it again. A Marcus Maddison penalty and a Gwion Edwards strike put the game to bed. Of the tie with Villa, Posh boss Grant McCann said: ‘We won’t be there to sit back. We will go there and give our fans a good day out.’ Elsewhere a quick-fire Will Grigg double broke AFC FYLDE’S hearts as WIGAN came from 2-1 down to end the non-League club’s FA Cup fairytale. Fylde had taken a shock lead, strikes from Simon Grand and Danny Rowe cancelling out Ivan Toney’s opener. But with just 10 minutes left to play, Grigg scored twice in four minutes as Wigan set up a third-round trip to Bournemouth. YEOVIL will host Bradford in the third round but they needed extra time to beat nine-man PORT VALE. Neil Aspin’s team were two men down from the 54th minute after Cristian Montano and James Gibbons saw red, but they came from behind twice before Francois Zoko finally ended their resistance in the 109th minute to give Yeovil a 3-2 victory. Jayden Stockley headed a 115th-minute winner as EXETER beat League Two rivals FOREST GREEN 2-1 to earn a third-round trip to Premier League strugglers West Bromwich Albion. Due to bad weather, CREWE’S match against BLACkBURN has been rearranged for tonight. CARLISLE’S game with GILLINGHAM was also called off due to a frozen pitch at Brunton Park. A new date is yet to be confirmed.
