HALF of Britons would happily receive their Christmas gifts unwrapped to save on waste, a survey shows.

The findings come amid concerns that certain types of glossy wrapping paper cannot be recycled and end up in landfill or being burned.

More than two in three of us – 69 per cent – consider the amount of rubbish thrown out over Christmas to be unacceptab­le, according to a Sky Ocean Rescue survey of more than 2,000 people.

Half said they would be happy for gifts not to be wrapped, while 46 per cent favoured receiving a digital Christmas greeting rather than a card.

Many people mistakenly believe shiny wrapping paper and Christmas cards with glitter can be recycled, although most councils won’t accept them.
