MINE’S A HAIRMERICANO!

-

Ever since Meghan Markle burst onto the scene with her luscious brunette locks, everyone’s gone mad for coffee.

No, not to drink . . . we’re talking hair colour. For Prince Harry’s fiancee’s tone has been likened to a rich mocha — so women who fancy a darker shade are seeking inspiration from their High Street coffee shops.

Celebrity colourist Jo Hansford, says modern colouring techniques such as balayage (freehand painting of the hair) and lowlighting mean every shade of brown is possible — from Meghan’s mocha to a caramel macchiato like Adele, or victoria Beckham’s very dark double espresso.

The thing about these rich coffee tones is that most women — whatever their age — can carry them off. But conditioning after every wash, and using a quality hair mask each week is vital, advises Jo.

So, too, is learning the art of the home blow-dry — otherwise, no matter how well you care for your hair, you’ll only ever look properly finished when you’re stepping out of the salon.

That’s because blow- drying close to the hair cuticles, ensuring they lay flat against the hair shaft and creating surface from which light can reflect, is simply the only way to ensure your hair truly shines.

If you can master a good blowdry and keep a stock of decent hair treatments in your bathroom cabinet, then it’s worth giving a darker shade a go.

And doing it at home means it doesn’t have to Costa lot.
