Drunk ex-MP ploughed Jag into OAP’s camper van

- By Inderdeep Bains

A FORMER Tory MP has been jailed after he crashed his Jaguar into a camper van while drunk, seriously injuring a pensioner.

Matthew Gordon Banks, 56, was more than twice the alcohol limit and had been banned for drink-driving two weeks earlier. Glenys Nixon, 71, who lived in her camper van while travelling the country, was left relying on crutches.

Gordon Banks, who served as MP for Southport between 1992 and 1997, was described as ‘a prolific drink-driver’.

Jailing him for 12 weeks, District Judge Tim Pattinson said he had ‘shown total disregard for the law and the court’ and described him as a ‘danger to the public’.

He added: ‘These are the actions of someone who is arrogant and thinks they are above the law.’

Oxford Magistrates’ Court heard that the accident happened in a lay-by near the former MP’s home in Charlbury, Oxfordshire.

He admitted drink-driving, two counts of driving while disqualified, two of driving without insurance and one of fraud relating to providing false information to Aviva.
