Guards told to call prisoners ‘men’
PRisOn guards have been told to call inmates ‘men’ instead of offenders.
a report into HMP Winchester in Hampshire, published yesterday by the independent Monitoring Board, said calling prisoners a different word would ‘modernise the prison’s culture’.
it is a part of a raft of suggestions to improve standards at the jail, where inspectors say there is a ‘prevailing sense’ the institution is ‘teetering on the edge of a major incident’.
But one guard said that calling prisoners ‘men’ would not work: ‘ We have been told to refer to prisoners as Mister previously and that hasn’t really worked out, and i can’t see this working either.’
