In following his spiky press conference this week, post-Watergate at Old Trafford, it was hard to shake the feeling that while one manager in Manchester is breaking records, the other just sounds like a broken record. He must exhaust himself with all this whining.

The sport has lost that right. What is remarkable, quite aside from the number of asthmatics that Team Sky have launched up mountains, is that the sport’s hardcore audience remains interested.
