TYSON FURY

PAINTED by droves of sycophants as a returning hero, but a hero of what exactly? He has just accepted a back-dated two-year ban for a doping violation and escaped further sanction over his refusal to take a test. Boxing has a big problem with drugs and nothing about this episode leaves a good taste.

JOSE MOURINHO

THERE’S no novelty about him any more. The aggression, the insults, the sense of superiority — it’s just boring. In following his spiky press conference this week, post-Watergate at Old Trafford, it was hard to shake the feeling that while one manager in Manchester is breaking records, the other just sounds like a broken record. He must exhaust himself with all this whining.

CYCLING

AND down goes another one. Time will tell if Chris Froome (right) and his crack lawyer can clear up this mess, but the disadvantage he has is that cyclists do not lend themselves to sympathy. The sport has lost that right. What is remarkable, quite aside from the number of asthmatics that Team Sky have launched up mountains, is that the sport’s hardcore audience remains interested. They deserve special jerseys for that.
