PC critical after being hit by Maserati

- By David Churchill

A POLICEMAN was fighting for his life last night after a Maserati ploughed into him and a female colleague before ending up in the lounge of a house.

The £65,000 car hit the officers at 3.40am yesterday as they returned to their marked car after dealing with another incident.

The male officer was in a critical condition in hospital, while his colleague was in a serious but stable condition, with several broken bones. Both PCs are in their thirties.

The white Maserati’s driver, a man in his fifties, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, having failed to provide a breath sample. He was in custody last night.

A woman in her forties, who was his passenger, was also taken to hospital, but was not badly hurt. The car crashed on a busy, 40mph stretch of the A406 dual carriageway in Neasden, north London.

After hitting the officers, it destroyed a Ford Fiesta owned by a couple whose living room was also ruined when it crashed through the wall of their house.

The couple, who have four children aged seven to 16, said: ‘We were all in bed – it sounded like a huge explosion.

‘When we came downstairs there was smoke everywhere, dust, bricks. We had to stay at our neighbour’s for the night.

‘One police officer was in a very critical state – on the floor clutching his stomach in a lot of pain. We didn’t see the female officer but you could hear her screaming.’
