50-1 MO IN SHOCK SPORTS PERSONALITY WIN

- MATT LAWTON Chief Sports Reporter at the Echo Arena, Liverpool

SIR MO FARAH was shocked last night when he was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year, upsetting odds offered by one bookmaker of 50-1. ‘I didn’t see that coming,’ said the four-time Olympic champion. ‘I genuinely thought I wasn’t going to win. We’ve got such amazing sports people in the UK with Jonnie Peacock, Anthony Joshua and Lewis Hamilton. It’s been incredible.’ There was embarrassment for the BBC when the live link to Farah, who was in London, was interrupted before he could be interviewed, but he did later speak to Radio 5 Live. ‘When you see the list, you put yourself in there and you think, “I could maybe finish in the top three”,’ he added. ‘I’m so surprised and I just want to thank everyone who’s voted for me and I’m sorry I can’t be there to celebrate.’ World heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua had been odds-on favourite but finished fourth. Northern Ireland’s World Superbikes champion Jonathan Rea finished second and para-athlete Peacock was third.
