Were the 11 Tory MPs right to rebel in the Brexit Commons vote?

-

HOW sickening it is to hear Remainers saying ‘well, you wanted parliamentary sovereignty back’ to justify obstructing the Brexit process. I assume they voted to Remain because they didn’t care about democracy and parliamentary sovereignty. Surely, they don’t seriously believe the EU is a democratic institution? Unelected commissioners’ diktats have held sway over our national affairs for too long. I was shocked, but not surprised, that David Miliband said democracy died on the day we voted for Brexit. And there was me thinking the referendum had been a democratic process! Those in the liberal elite really do seem to believe they have a divine right to rule, they use the democratic process to give themselves legitimacy — and then simply ignore those who voted for them.

M. DILLON, Sheerness, Kent.

‘PRoUD of yourselves?’ you ask of the Tory rebels. Well, indeed, they should be. I find it incomprehensible that anyone would object to Parliament having the final say on any Brexit deal. Leaving this decision to the party in power, whoever that might be, is not good enough. There are 45 million voters in the UK of whom only 17.4 million voted for Brexit.

DO THE 11 has-beens, wish-they-hadbeens and are-never-likely-to-bes really want a General Election? I don’t.

J. BROOK, Highcliffe, Dorset. I AM ashamed to say Dominic Grieve is my MP. He has betrayed the Prime Minister, the Conservative Party and his constituents who voted to leave the EU. We should find a way to de-select him.

H. DOWLING, Iver, Bucks.

WHAT a bunch of malcontents are those who wish to ignore the referendum result. They claim to uphold democracy, but ignore the will of the people.

D. BECK, Waterlooville, Hants. THE headline ‘Proud of yourselves?’ should be answered with a resounding: ‘Yes — we are!’ By ensuring the House of Commons must have a meaningful say in the Brexit arrangements, these 11 Tories have resisted the high-handed approach of the Government. Instead they have ensured that the people’s representatives — our MPs — will have the last word. With the Commons reasserting itself at the heart of our democracy, it might be possible to claim we are going to ‘take back control’.

ALEC SYNGE, Etchingham, E. Sussex.

IF PARLIAMENT votes down any agreement, does it mean it will be a hard Brexit? Have turkeys voted for Christmas?

D. GRAINGER, Sonning Common, Oxon.
