Nurse who pretended to be a man to trick ten women into web affairs

- By Tom Witherow

A NURSE who pretended she was a male doctor to pursue online relationships with ten women has been jailed for 22 months.

Adele Rennie, 27, used fake names and voice-changing technology in a four-year cyber-stalking campaign.

She sent victims nude pictures of a man via social media and dating sites, begging for explicit images in return that she threatened to share if they tried to end the online relationship.

Rennie, a nurse at Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock, called her victims – who included a former Miss Scotland finalist – using a voice changing app that made her sound male as they shared sexually charged conversations.

Some received flowers from her aliases, which she hand delivered.

Rennie would arrange to meet the women and then cancel at the last moment, often saying close family were very ill, Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard.

One hospital colleague was targeted and she accessed the medical records of another victim in an attempt to obtain private details. Rennie’s deceit was exposed when she tried to seduce model Abbie Draper, a former Miss Scotland finalist, who had visited the hospital to see her dying grandfather.

Miss Draper, 27, met Rennie, who was working on the ward. The nurse later contacted her on Facebook posing as a doctor called David Graham.

A friend of Miss Draper told her the same Facebook account had been used to contact another friend.

The phone number connected to the account was then linked to Rennie. Miss Draper sent a series of angry texts but Rennie maintained the pretence of being a doctor, despite NHS having no record of the name she used.

Rennie fooled a colleague into believing she was having a fivemonth relationship with Dr David Graham and persuaded her to send naked pictures.

When the colleague became suspicious, Rennie threatened to expose the explicit images. After her arrest, Rennie broke her bail conditions by accessing dating and social media sites and contacting one victim.

She admitted committing 18 offences between 2012 and 2016. They included stalking, sexual offences, breaching the Data Protection Act, attempting to pervert the course of justice by hiding a phone from police, causing fear and alarm, NHS computer misuse and breaching bail.

Paul Gallagher, defending, said Rennie accepted full responsibility for the ‘bizarre’ offences and was ‘extremely sorry’.

Jailing a weeping Rennie on Monday and placing her on the sex offenders’ register for ten years, Sheriff Elizabeth McFarlane said she caused ‘humiliation and harm’ to her victims.

Afterwards Miss Draper told the Scottish Sun: ‘She’s been smug throughout it all and I feel like her tears were fake. I’m just glad I can finally move on with my life now she’s in prison.’
