THE tune for the carol O Holy Night was written by the French composer Adolphe Adam in 1847. Adam wrote many operas and ballets, and there is something very lyrical and balletic about this lovely tune. John Sullivan Dwight wrote English words for the carol in 1855, and it has been recorded by many singers, including Bing Crosby, Cher and Perry Como. In SOUL MUSIC (9AM, 9.30PM, RADIO 4), the first of a new series about famous pieces of music with emotional appeal, the Archbishop of York, the singer Katie Melua (pictured) and conductor Bob Chilcott tell us what this carol means to them.

JOINING JO WHILEY (8PM, RADIO 2) tonight are Chas & Dave, who are on a ‘rockney’ tour of the UK. The indie folk singer

Gabrielle Aplin will also be a guest, and Elbow will set up in the studio. Pearl Mackie from Doctor Who drops in, along with Blur bass man Alex James.
