Beyond parody! Beeb gets £78k ‘head of change’

- By Media and Technology Editor

IN what could be a line straight out of the comedy show W1A, which satirises its own corporate gobbledegook, the BBC is recruiting a £78,000 ‘head of change’.

However, the job advert for the role is beyond satire.

The accompanying job description runs to four A4 pages and uses the word ‘change’ 77 times.

Unfortunately, candidates who read the jargon-laden document to discover what is expected of them are unlikely to be any the wiser. The successful applicant must ‘influence the success of the Terms and Conditions programme with far-reaching impacts’ while ‘leveraging opportunities for benefits’.

They will have to ensure ‘the change environment is understood’ and ‘engage senior stakeholders to understand change impacts’.

BBC staff have drawn comparisons with the gobbledegook spouted by W1A characters ‘director of better’ Anna Rampton, played by Sarah Parish, ‘head of values’ Ian Fletcher (Hugh Bonneville) and PR consultant Siobhan Sharpe (Jessica Hynes).

All of them satirise BBC management- speak by spouting meaningless nonsense in meetings.

In October, the BBC admitted some of its job titles had got out of hand, and pledged to whittle all 5,000 down to 600 by November.

Yesterday, it said the cull was complete – but that ‘head of change’ was one of the titles allowed to survive.
