MERYL Streep has been targeted by a poster campaign over her apparent support for shamed producer Harvey Weinstein.

The 68-year- old actress has said she had no idea about Weinstein’s alleged sexual misconduct, despite appearing in a number of his films.

But posters accusing her of being ‘deliberately silent’ on the issue popped up around Los Angeles before sunrise on Tuesday with the words ‘She Knew’ across her eyes. In the picture she is standing next to Weinstein.

The posters could apparently be seen near the Hollywood Highland Centre, the 20th century Fox Studios, and close to Streep’s Pasadena home.

Weinstein, 65, has been accused of sexual misconduct over 30 years by around 100 women. The allegations include three rapes.

On Monday, Miss Streep, who has won three Oscars, released a statement claiming she had no idea about the accusations against Weinstein.

She said: ‘I wasn’t deliberately silent. I didn’t know. I don’t tacitly approve of rape. I didn’t know. I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening.’

She spoke out after Rose McGowan, one of Weinstein’s most vocal critics, accused her of ‘hypocrisy’ after ‘happily working for the Pig Monster’.

Miss Streep has appeared in a number of Weinstein-backed films, including 2011’s The Iron Lady in which she played Margaret Thatcher.

When she won the Golden Globe for her role in the film, Miss Streep jokingly called Weinstein ‘god’ in her acceptance speech.

Representatives for Weinstein have said repeatedly that ‘any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied’ by the producer.
