HE was the armchair star who won the hearts of millions thanks to his cheeky grin and earthy humour.

Now Channel Four has dedicated its Christmas Gogglebox special to the show’s Leon Bernicoff, who died aged 83 after a short illness.

Gogglebox follows ordinary families as they watch and review the week’s television.

Retired teacher Mr Bernicoff, from Liverpool, became a favourite with fans thanks to his light-hearted bickering with wife June, to whom he was married for 53 years.

At the start of Sunday’s programme, an announcer said: ‘Before Gogglebox begins, we’re sorry to share the very sad news that Leon passed away in hospital yesterday. He will be sorely missed and we dedicate tonight’s show to his memory’.

The programme opened with previously recorded footage of Mr Bernicoff trying some Christmas sweets. The couple delighted fans with their amusing and often heartwarming repartee, including the Everton supporter’s comments about heaven.

In an episode which moved some fans to tears, the pair watched a scene from Gladiator where Russell Crowe’s character is reunited with his wife and child in death. Looking at his wife, Mr Bernicoff said: ‘He’s died and he’s joined them. I like to think that’s true, you know. I’d join you, you see. Always, June.’

Thanking fans for their messages of condolence, Mrs Bernicoff said: ‘Leon would have loved reading them and hearing how much he was loved.’ The couple were the first to be cast for the programme, which has enjoyed ten series since beginning in 2013. Mr Bernicoff was born on October 27, 1934. He is survived by wife June, two daughters and grandchildren.

Channel 4 said: ‘Leon’s unique personality and sharp wit endeared him to fans of the show as he contributed fully to Gogglebox’s reputation as a programme full of warm humour and unvarnished opinion. To those of us that knew him, Leon was a man of unwavering principles who exerted a distinct paternal presence both on and off screen.’
