Should council tax be increased by £100?

-

I READ Town halls are being given the power to raise council tax by £100. I live in a village that pays tax to Preston City Council and would love to pay the national average of £1,511 for our Band C property. This year we paid £1,570.36 and it’s extra to have our garden waste collected. There is a very poor bus service, so it is hard to know what we are getting for our money. MARGARET PHIPPs, Goosnargh, Lancs. IT’S been reported that the council tax rise for 2003/4 was only 11.4 per cent, but mine went up by no less than 17.06 per cent. Since 2010, the Government has capped how much local government can increase the charge while at the same time reduced the rate support grant. It’s small wonder council leaders would like more. The way things are going, public libraries, along with help for the disadvantaged young and old, will be a thing of the past. Meanwhile, big businesses such as Amazon, Google and Uber seem to get away with paying little, if any, tax. J. LUXON, Weston-super-Mare, somerset. WHAT fool thinks it is a good idea to give the councils the green light to increase the council tax levies for police and crime commissioners and social care? It will hit the poor and pensioners hardest. Take it from the foreign aid budget. JOHN MARCHANT, Banbury, Oxon.
