Now monkey and python die at zoo that lost lynx

- By Tom Payne

A PYTHON and a monkey have died at a zoo which was closed after a lynx escaped, it is claimed.

Borth Wild Animal Kingdom in mid-Wales has been shut since the lynx broke free and was shot dead last month. Another lynx was accidentally strangled on a keeper’s catchpole.

The son of the zoo’s ex-owners claims that in the past month a Burmese python ‘froze to death’ and a squirrel monkey ‘died because it wasn’t being fed properly’, The Times reported.

The deaths have been called a ‘strange coincidence’ by a wildlife biologist, who claimed there were ‘inadequate shelters’.

Ceredigion council banned the zoo from keeping big cats and great apes. Owners Dean and Tracy Tweedy are appealing.

Mark Cook, son of ex-owners Jean and Alan Mumbray, said: ‘ How many others have died … what was the cause?’

The council said the snake was put down as it had a mouth inflammation. The monkey died ‘after an illness’, a source said.

Mrs Tweedy said ‘all my animals have proper veterinary care’. The zoo’s vet at Ystwyth Veterinary Practice, Aberystwyth, declined to comment.
