Deep down, Shearer will hate losing record
I NEVER thought Alan Shearer’s record for the most Premier League goals in a calendar year would be broken. Prolific forwards Robin van Persie, Thierry Henry and Ruud van Nistelrooy have come close only to fall short. It shows what an extraordinary feat Harry Kane has achieved. I played alongside Shearer in Blackburn’s title-winning season and can barely remember him missing a chance. He had such belief in his finishing and a limitless hunger. Shearer made scoring look effortless when it is anything but. It is the same with Kane. Do not be fooled by Kane’s mild-mannered demeanour in interviews. He has a ruthless desire which has driven him to the highest level. Shearer had an obsessive nature and determination to be the best. While he has congratulated Kane, I am sure deep down he will be gutted to lose his record. Kane is the only man who looks capable of chasing down Shearer’s all-time record of 260 Premier League goals. What is so exciting about Kane is that you feel there is even more to come.
