Trump: US is so chilly, we need some global warming!

- From Daniel Bates in New York

DONALD Trump has claimed America could use ‘a bit of that good old global warming’ amid a deep freeze across the US.

As most of the country suffered an Arctic blast with 5ft snowdrifts and temperatures as low as -41C, the President suggested the world needed to heat up.

But critics said he did not understand the difference between weather – what was happening daily – and climate – conditions over a longer period.

Mr Trump had tweeted: ‘In the East, it could be the COLDEST New Year’s Eve on record. Perhaps we could use a little bit of that good old global warming that our country, but not other countries, was going to pay TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS to protect against. Bundle up!’

Mr Trump appeared to be referring to the Paris climate accord from which he withdrew the US. The President has claimed in the past that global warming was a ‘hoax’ dreamed up by the Chinese.

More than half of Americans – about 200million people – are suffering through the current bout of extreme weather.

The town of Cotton, Minnesota was among the coldest places with the mercury plummeting to -41C (-41F).

But Matthew England, a climate scientist from the University of New South Wales, said: ‘Climate change is not overturned by a few unusually cold days in the US.’
