Young and Naughton banned for New Year

- By CHRIS WHEELER

ASHLEY YOUNG of Manchester United and Swansea’s Kyle Naughton have both fallen foul of the FA for violent conduct missed by the officials but caught on camera. Young will miss United’s trip to Everton this evening after receiving a three-match ban for elbowing Dusan Tadic in the 0-0 home draw with Southampton. The United defender accepted a charge of violent conduct but contested the length of the suspension, which covers his side’s first three games of 2018. But his argument was last night rejected by the FA and the 32-year-old will now miss United’s FA Cup tie at home to Derby on Friday and the Premier League game against Stoke in addition to the clash at Goodison Park. It leaves Jose Mourinho without an entire back four after Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling were ruled out through injury. Young was seen elbowing Saints forward Tadic in the stomach at a corner. Referee Craig Pawson and his assistants missed the incident, leading to the FA bringing a charge of violent conduct yesterday. Swansea defender Naughton will also serve a three-match ban after accepting a charge of violent conduct. The right back was caught on camera stamping on Watford striker Stefano Okaka during Swansea’s 2-1 win at Vicarage Road but it was not spotted by referee Martin Atkinson. Naughton, 29, will miss Premier League games against Tottenham and Newcastle, as well as Swansea’s FA Cup thirdround trip to Wolves.
