Bigamist caught by wife... on TV with wife No 2
As she settled down for a saturday evening watching TV on the sofa, Helen Gundry thought her husband Daniel was away working in the Middle East.
so the 51-year-old was stunned when she tuned in to a live television show to see him on screen – and on the arm of his other wife.
The bigamist, 39, who was estranged from Mrs Gundry, appeared on Ant and Dec’s saturday Night Takeaway on ITV1 with his second wife, artist sue Brooker, 44.
The pair were spotted among guests being taken by the television stars to the surprise wedding of Miss Brooker’s sister.
It later emerged that Gundry had married Miss Brooker in a luxury ceremony in Dubai a year earlier.
He was subsequently dumped by both women, who reported him to the police.
Yesterday a judge told Gundry, who admitted bigamy, that he had caused both wives ‘embarrassment, shame and humiliation’. He was jailed for six months. Gundry, who worked in audio visuals, married his first wife in 1998 and the couple had a daughter, Daisy, 16, together.
Although the pair split and dated other partners, they never divorced.
Warrington Magistrates’ Court was told that Gundry had lied to Mrs Gundry when she confronted him about pictures of his seychelles ‘wedding’ to Miss Brooker on social media in 2014.
Gundry told her the ceremony was not official and was simply a ‘blessing’, the court heard. But he later forged documents in order to get married to Miss Brooker for real in Dubai a year later in April 2015.
Retail manager Mrs Gundry, from Warrington, Cheshire, said her husband later claimed he had split from Miss Brooker, who has a son from a previous relationship, and even suggested they get back together.
so she was stunned when she and Daisy saw the couple on the Ant and Dec programme in March 2016.
speaking of the moment she realised her husband was with another woman on live television, Mrs Gundry said: ‘I choked. Daisy yelped, “Oh my god, it’s Dad, he’s with sue”.
‘I had to walk out so I didn’t break down. Daisy virtually collapsed. I came back downstairs and we just cuddled, I think we both went into shock.
‘I don’t think I cried until the day after. I was so angry and went on Facebook.’
Following the broadcast mother-of-four Mrs Gundry left a comment on show’s social media page, which later went viral. she wrote: ‘I loved the wedding and the surprised guests – I didn’t love the sight of my husband who’s supposed to be working in Dubai (first off the coach Daniel Gundry) arriving on the arm of another woman, a woman he’s supposed to have split from last year.
‘We have a 15-year-old daughter who’s in absolute bits.’
In a victim impact statement, she revealed she had suffered sleepless nights and depression because of his actions.
As she left the court with her daughter in tears yesterday, Mrs Gundry said of her estranged husband: ‘He has been lying for a long time so I’m just glad that finally he’s been found out.’
Gundry, of Ashford, surrey, who was not legally represented, told the court he accepted in full the damage he had caused. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £115.
