Germany’s threat to City
BRITAIN could be forced to pay for the City of London to have access to European markets, it was claimed last night.
The German finance and foreign ministry said the UK will only get a trade deal that includes financial services if it pledges substantial EU budget contributions, reports said.
The Government has not ruled out continuing to make payments to Brussels for ‘specific projects or areas of cooperation’ but the Prime Minister says Britain will not make ‘vast contributions’.
But according to Bloomberg News, Germany will reject attempts to include financial services in a post-Brexit trade deal unless we agree to substantial payments.
It comes as Chancellor Philip Hammond and Brexit Secretary David Davis are in Germany to make the case for a wide-ranging Brexit deal.
