HOW THE DEBATE RAGED

-

AGAINST THE VISIT

It appears President Trump got the message from the many Londoners who love and admire America and Americans but find his policies and actions the polar opposite of our city’s values of inclusion, diversity and tolerance. His visit would without doubt have been met by mass peaceful protests. SADIQ KHAN, London mayor Nah... the reason is that we Brits aren’t terribly welcoming of racists, misogynists and Islamophobes who promote hatred in our country. CHUKA UMUNNA, Labour MP You finally got the message that you’d be met by millions of us out on the streets protesting. DAVID LAMMY, Labour MP Nope, it’s because nobody wanted you to come and you got the message. ED MILIBAND, ex-Labour leader The new embassy is 15 minutes from Parliament, we all know why he cancelled this visit... because he knew there would be mass demonstrations if he dared to come to the opening. He is not welcome in London. AYDIN DIKERDEM, Labour cllr News that Trump has thrown his toys out of the pram... will be welcomed by all of us who reject his abhorrent views. JO SWINSON, Lib Dem deputy leader Reason Trump cancelled trip to London is that we are not a big fan of his racist, sexist, unthinking behaviour. STEPHEN DOUGHTY, Labour MP

IN FAVOUR OF THE VISIT

The US is the biggest single investor in the UK yet Khan and Corbyn seem determined to put this crucial relationship at risk. We will not allow USUK relations to be endangered by some puffed up pompous popinjay in City Hall. BORIS JOHNSON, Foreign Secretary It’s disappointing. Maybe, just maybe, Sadiq Khan, Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party planning mass protests, maybe those optics he didn’t like the look of. NIGEL FARAGE, ex-Ukip leader He’s US head of state and the US is major important ally of the UK MICHAEL FABRICANT, Tory MP I think it’s a great shame; the US is one of our closest allies, but the alliance isn’t based on who lives in the White House. TOM TUGENDHAT, foreign affairs committee chairman
