And the gong for the most cruel man in Hollywood goes to . . .

-

Ewan Mcgregor was always one of my favourite leading men. whether he was starring in Moulin rouge! or Trainspotting he could do gritty and he could do gorgeous.

what I admired most was how grounded he seemed off-screen, with his tireless charity work and apparent devotion to family — he has a heart and dagger tattoo with his wife’s and daughters’ names on his arm.

So I was shocked when he was pictured in october publicly smooching Mary elizabeth winstead, his co-star in the TV series Fargo.

I was appalled when it emerged he’d abandoned his wife eve and four daughters, the youngest of whom is just six, to be with her.

and I felt nothing but contempt when, collecting a gong at the Golden Globe awards earlier this week, he publicly thanked both his wife and new girlfriend for their support.

I can’t think of anything more insulting or cruel to eve, 51, than bracketing her in this way with the woman who’s not only ousted her in her husband’s affections, but is also 18 years her junior.

For 22 years, eve devoted herself to McGregor, raising the children while he gallivanted across the globe filming in exotic locations. and yet, the woman who has been with eve’s husband for just three months has been given equal billing. It seems he just could not care less.

To make things even worse, on Thursday at the Critics’ Choice awards, he paraded Mary for the cameras, sitting with her and kissing her, before collecting another award and then thanking her — again.

Most dumped wives only have to suffer the pain of knowing their husband is with another woman. McGregor has been flaunting his new love to the world. Twice in a week. How raw eve’s pain must be. and yet this is a man who parades himself as a humanitarian and was awarded the oBe for services to charity. as a Unicef ambassador he is constantly on our screens asking us to dig deep, to show compassion to the world’s starving children.

what a tragedy he could not muster any compassion for his own wife. at the next awards ceremony he should get the gong for the cruellest man in Hollywood.
