MAHONIA X MEDIA WINTER SUN

-

HERE’S a hybrid Oregon Grape that will give loads of winter cheer. The long, spiny, pinnate leaves are arranged nicely on stout two to three-metre stems. At the end of each one, big clusters of bright yellow flowers are carried along pendulous stalks. Flowering begins in late autumn but the plant’s greatest value comes now, when the vivid blossoms look their best. They contrast superbly with the deep green leaves. Though shade-tolerant, this mahonia flowers best in a sunny spot. What’s more, the golden yellow petals are almost dazzling when the low winter sun lights them up.
