Lancaster Pilot Leonard Cheshire was not only the youngest Group Captain in Bomber Command, but also the most decorated. The son of an Oxford law professor, he completed an extraordin­ary 102 missions - including heroic spells leading the Pathfinder Force which guided bombers to their targets. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for ‘outstandin­g personal achievemen­t’ against ‘the bitterest opposition’. After the war he became an tireless campaigner for the disabled.
