Stellenrust Old Bush Vine Cinsault 2016, now £7.49, Waitrose THIS is made from one of the oldest plantings of cinsault vines in the country. The grapes are handpicked and the wine’s left to age in French oak barrels. Fantastic value, with lots of juicy red cherry flavours.
WHITE WINE
Truly Irresistible Sauvignon Blanc 2016, £7.49, Co-op FROM Chile’s Leyda Valley, a tuckedaway region close to the coast. Pacific breezes cool the valley, producing a wine packed with passionfruit, lime and gooseberry flavours. One to put a spring in your step.
Food pairing: Spicy prawns
RED WINE
Zalze Shiraz/Mourvedre/Viognier 2016, £7, Morrisons THIS South African red is based on a classic blend from the Rhone Valley in France. It definitely works here too, with vibrant blackberry flavours and a generous kick of spice.
Food pairing: Beef stew
SPARKLING WINE
Oudinot Brut NV, £27, M&S A GORGEOUS Chardonnay-based champagne. Refreshingly understated with light citrus flavours and a whiff of digestive biscuits. If you want an elegant champagne without paying for a big name, this one’s worth seeking out.
