CHARGING for plastic bags is fine, but why punish the public when stores should provide an alternative: paper carrier bags? PHILIP TYRRELL, Yeovil, Somerset.
WHY isn’t the Government pushing wood-based cellophane as a 100 per cent biodegradable alternative for food packaging? Mind, the oil corporations wouldn’t be best pleased. EDWARD EATEM, Hartlepool, Co. Durham.
MRS MAY vows to end the scourge of disposable plastic (Mail). Another promise? Politicians study PPE at university — pledges, prevarications and excuses. DAVID BECK, Sale, Cheshire.

THE soup I buy in a waxed carton comes with a plastic cap, which in no way improves access. Similarly, a fruit flan comes vacuum packed in a cardboard box rather than in a foil tray, again not aiding access, but creating plastic waste. GAVIN GORDON, Bosham, W. Sussex.
