dUE to the high numbers leaving the profession, the NHS has Nurse Ambassador­s to tell everyone what a great career it is.

Yes, it is rewarding, but far less so than it used to be. The current crisis is due partly to the abysmal pay nurses get for all they do. Another reason is the high number of middlegrad­e nursing staff who get paid a lot more than those who do the bulk of the work.

It is demoralisi­ng and insulting, and hospital trusts should reverse this trend if they want to keep frontline staff.
